Latest Farm Happenings
We have overcome a slow start to get most of our planting done with the help of our interns Jack and Becca! All of our plots are looking much better (like an actual farm!) with lots of goodies to come. We processed our first batch of meat chickens on Sunday (a smaller batch of 35), so we now have birds to sell. Becca was a gamer, stepping right into helping out with all aspects of the process, a first for her. A few thoughts on the processing of animals for food; first, eating meat of any kind is an individual decision. Some people choose not to eat meat for several reasons. These may include dietary, moral, ethical, environmental, philosophical, and others. We choose to raise meat chickens for ourselves and our customers, and we process them ourselves. I've heard people claim that those who raise animals for meat somehow don't care about animals since they must be killed. However, I believe it's not that simple. We personally raise each animal from days old right up to harvest time. Along the way we give great time, effort, and care to these animals to provide them with quality food, water, and shelter. I dare say that the vast majority of meat eaters see only the end product and do not make the investment we make in our animals. Everyone who eats meat of any kind, I believe, owes it to themselves (and the animals!) to at least educate themselves about the particular pathway that the food system takes to bring that animal to their fridge, freezer, and table. Besides the hatching, we do it all ourselves (or in the case of red meat, it's done by farmers we know), and so our customers know exactly where their chicken has come from and how it was raised and processed. We encourage you all to do some investigation into food systems and learn where your food, meat or otherwise, comes from. Plus, you can always visit us in person and we'll show you exactly how we do it!
